The application of EDFA in optical fiber communication system mainly has the following forms:
1. As a preamplifier. For the receiver's preamplifier, it is generally required to be a high-gain, low-noise amplifier. Due to the low-noise characteristics of EDFA, when it is used as a receiver's preamplifier, the sensitivity of the optical receiver can be greatly improved.
2. Use as a transmitter power amplifier. If the bait-doped fiber amplifier is connected to the output end of the optical transmitter, it can be used to increase the output power, increase the optical power of the fiber, and extend the transmission distance.
3. Use as optical relay. This is an important application of EDFA in optical fiber communication systems. It can replace the traditional optical/electrical/optical repeater and directly amplify the optical signal in the line to realize the all-optical communication technology.
